Keratin Complex Smoothing: NKST, Express Blow Out & KC Rio

The Keratin Complex smoothing treatments I keep — and how each one fits, if you already color with me.

Keratin Complex is the professional smoothing line I reach for when Pure Brazilian isn't quite the right tool for the job. Like everything smoothing-related here, I treat these as add-ons for the guests I'm already coloring — a way to make your color easier to live with through a Florida summer, not a reason to book on their own. If you want the bigger picture first, start with my honest guide to adding smoothing to your color. This page is the deeper detail on the three Keratin Complex options.

NKST — the long-lasting one (up to five months)

NKST, the Natural Keratin Smoothing Treatment, is the full professional treatment in the Keratin Complex line, built on their Signature Keratin technology to repair, smooth, and protect against humidity. It's one of the longest-lasting smoothing options anywhere — results hold up to five months. What changes afterward is hard to appreciate until you live it: your hair dries significantly faster, the frizz that usually ambushes you the moment you open the car door in July just doesn't show up the same way, and your color looks more vibrant because the cuticle is sealed and smooth rather than rough and raised. It repairs damage while it smooths, so your hair comes out healthier, not just coated — and the results are cumulative, building with each treatment. This is the one to talk about if you've fought persistent frizz for years and want to come in less often while your hair finally works with you.

Express Blow Out — the quick add-on (about six weeks)

The Express Blow Out (you may have seen it as EBO or KCExpress — same treatment) is the low-commitment member of the family. Added to a color appointment it takes about 15 minutes; on its own it runs under an hour. Powered by the same Signature Keratin, it seals the cuticle right after color — locking in vibrancy, smoothing the surface, and putting a barrier between your hair and the humidity waiting in the parking lot. Results last up to about six weeks, you can wash your hair just eight hours later with no fuss, and because it's targeted, I can place it exactly where you need it — along the hairline, through the ends, on bangs that have been fighting you all summer. It's the perfect way to try smoothing before committing to NKST, or to lock things in before a wedding, holiday, or a day full of photos.

KC Rio — the bold, formaldehyde-free straightener (up to three months)

When you genuinely want straighter — not just smoother — KC Rio is the boldest thing Keratin Complex makes. The KCRIO Restorative Keratin System pairs Signature Keratin with creatine and murumuru butter to restore structure while it delivers a sleek, glass-like finish, and it does it with zero formaldehyde. It uses a quick spray application with about a 20-minute processing time, same-day styling is fine (no waiting window), and results last up to three months. It's built for thick, curly, or high-frizz hair that wants real straightening power and can stand up to a Florida summer. Of the three, this is the one that changes your texture the most — so it's a proper consultation conversation before we go there.

Which one is right for you?

Honest answer: it depends on your hair, your color, and how often you want to be in the chair. NKST for the longest hold, the Express Blow Out for a quick humidity buffer that locks in fresh color, KC Rio when you truly want straighter. And because every one of these sits around your color, the timing matters — I walk through the full color-sequencing reality in the main smoothing guide. If you already color with me, just bring it up at your next visit and we'll find the right fit together.

Hey Paula. NKST would be great if you want straighter hair and less volume. If you want to keep your volume, I would suggest Pure Brazilian. If you keep an eye on the blog, I will be posting about it soon, but I will also text you more info.

Hi Dean
Would NKST be a good option for my hair? I’m always fighting with frizz. How long does it take?
